In the at dawn 1970s during the Cold War, the tend of British Intelligence, Control, resigns for an operation in Budapest, Hungary goes badly ~ly. It transpires that Control believed unit of four senior figures in the labor was in fact a Russian actor - a mole - and the Hungary proceeding was an attempt to identify that of them it was. Smiley had been catachrestic into retirement by the departure of Control, yet is asked by a senior direction figure to investigate a story told to him through a rogue agent, Ricky Tarr, that there was a mole. Smiley considers that the failure of the Hungary agency and the continuing success of Operation Witchcraft (an apparent source of significant Soviet notification) confirms this, and takes up the drudgery of finding him. Through the efforts of Peter Guillam, Smiley obtains advice that eventually leads him to Jim Prideaux, the cause at the heart of the Hungary abortive attempt...
